Photograph: Jerry Melin At Mud Bay, Bainbridge Island, Washington

This is one of my favorite Mel pictures. If you look close, you sense the many facets of Mel. . . .shards of something extra, something a little bent; a soul that ranged the darkness and the sublime. He always had something going--something else, something extra bubbling away just under the surface.

This is how Jerry might smile if he loved you.

Great picture, Jackie, can you date it? By the way, I'm not always clear as to which figure warrants the villain title. Any guidance would be appreciated.

This pic. was taken right around 1991, I think. We rented a house on Bainbridge with the Melins & kids for two days. Del wasn't born yet. This is around the time he quit drinking. I like the photo because it is pretty much how he looked up to the time he died.

As to who are the villains in Heroes & Villains are...there are some where you just don't know. I choose LBJ as a hero, although he was a villain too...although not the villain Adolph was. Some of the others depend on your politics, certainly. Any specfic ones in mind? /jackie

Just two pairings really: Declan & The Kid and Mao & Coltrane. OK I know John couldn't really be considered a villian but you could argue hero status for Mao. And EC, and you know I love the guy, is more a prolific crank than a hero, isn't he?

Jerry looks so sweet there but is that pure twinkle or do you remember some imp enhancement on BI that summer?

That's interesting! I guess I made Mao the villain because there were so many victims in his wake--millions reportedly, and then there was the "cultural revolution." Elvis. . .hey, I think a lot of prolific cranks made my heroes list (for example, most of the Grateful Dead, Larry Rivers, Warhol).

As to Mel's twinkle. . .I'm pretty sure it is all natural, since it is the daytime, and this was A Family Trip! All enhancements such as you refer to, would surely have occurred well after dark...

Who is this? Should we know him?

Yes you should have known him! He's not that famous, but we all missed something when he departed this earth...
